California is setting up a market for carbon, as part of the state's effort to cut global warming emissions. Early next year, companies that need to reduce their emissions could pay farmers to store carbon in wetlands that could in turn help bolster California's aging levy system.

It seems to have gone virtually unnoticed, but the world leaders at the weekend's G8 summit look as if they have taken the biggest step in years in tackling climate change. The summit's final communiqué supports “comprehensive actions” to reduce “short-lived climate pollutants”.

At some point, the way Colorado River water gets divvied up is going to have to change. The lower basin states of Arizona and Nevada use more water than they're allowed to under the compact that runs the river. Climate change will likely make droughts worse.

Scientists have identified thousands of sites in the Arctic where methane that has been stored for many millennia is bubbling into the atmosphere. The methane has been trapped by ice, but is able to escape as the ice melts.
