ICT news from Norfolk and beyond

After only 5 weeks, a lot of news seems to have accumulated. Please use the list on the right to find the articles that are relevant to you.

CAS Hub Meeting

We’ve got the first proper CAS Hub meeting at the UEA next Weds 12th Oct at 4:30pm.

We’ve got a few folks registered but if you’re planning to come along could you register at http://casnorfolkteachers2.eventbrite.com/ so we can track names, contact details and so on.  Alternatively, just drop me an email to let me know you’re coming along.

Also – we’re a bit light on numbers so if you know of anyone who might be interested but may not yet have heard about CAS, please pass this on.  The more the merrier!!

Qualifications Update

We are yet to find out which vocational qualifications will be counting towards the maximum 20% (1 GCSE equivalent) for the 5A*-C incl English and Maths measure. We also know that some qualifications have a limited lifespan. We will discuss this in more detail during the subject leader network and I have contacted some of the exam boards to invite them to update us.

New GCSE for ICT being trialled

There are some interesting developments, not least because of an active lobby of those involved in promoting programming within or instead of ICT education. The links below take you to the same document, first page 4 regarding news of another new GCSE and then page 11 with a useful commentary on the current debate.

GCSE Computing Specification Accredited

This two-year pilot course is now available for first teaching in September 2011. GCSE Computing gives students a real, in-depth understanding of how computer technology works. Students will develop critical thinking, analysis and problem-solving skills, which can be transferred to other subjects and even applied in day-to-day life. “I love every aspect of the course from the programming to the problem solving!” GCSE Computing student from Emmbrook School, Wokingham

This course is already being deliverd in Norfolk and you may be interested in the Computing at School Hub if you are planning to introduce this type of course.

Ofqual to launch GCSE consultation

On Monday 26th September Ofqual launched a consultation into the implementation of reforms to GCSEs. The consultation covers the changes being made to current GCSE specifications.

The specifications for GCSEs are to be made linear rather than modular, and greater account will be taken of spelling, punctuation and grammar in some subjects. The consultation will ask specific questions on how these changes will be implemented.

The consultation will run on our consultation platform for six weeks. LINK

Your Future Ditital Event

Your Future in Digital has been a very successful event in recent years, giving older secondary pupils an insight to career opportunities in digital industries. This year the event takes place on 9/10 November at the EPIC Studios in Norwich. Please see the flyer for more details.

Young Leaders Award at Hellesdon High

Laura Boddy (AST) from Hellesdon describes how this award enables young people to produce ICT based lesson starter and plenary activities, teach year 6 pupils ICT and even support elderly people with web surfing. Take a look at her brief report here.

Fronter Y11 and Wednesday Webinars

Fronter Y11 is coming! The current release date for Norfolk is Thursday 13th October. A lot of support can be found on their website: http://frontersupport.com/, including some useful webinars and recordings of previous events.

Norfolk has a Futurelab Hub - Congratulations to City Academy Norwich (CAN)!

The first five Hubs – City Academy Norwich, Copland Community School (Wembley), Fallibroome Academy (Macclesfield), Tudor Grange Academy (Solihull) and Wilmington Grammar School for Girls / Wilmington Grammar School for Boys (Dartford) - are actively engaging with the research base and working on a range of strategies to improve learner outcomes, for example;

The development of ‘World Class Departments’
Tackling within school variation (development of ‘100%
system’)
Defining the ‘language of learning’ and the specific 21st
century skills every pupil will require to succeed in the future
Engaging use of technologies (e.g. iPod touch)
Understanding the role of ICT in bridging the work between faculties in cross curricular enquiry based
learning
Futurelab Hubs are expected to adopt a disciplined approach to school improvement based on action research (a reflective process of progressive problem solving led by individuals working with others in teams) involving staff and students to transform the quality of learning and teaching.

Futurelab are now looking to recruit the next cohort of Futurelab Hub schools. Further background information on Hubs can be found on the futurelab website. Please contact Stephen Breslin if you would like to discuss how Futurelab might support you to transform your teaching and learning.

Bespoke School Improvement and Professional Development

The Integrated Education Advisory Service has a track record of effective secondary school improvement. Our successful approaches are tried and tested and supported by contemporary theory. We understand that the key to school improvement is capacity building through strategically designed, sustainable and manageable models of support which lead to a real change in the way teachers think about their practice.

Key Issue Audits (e.g. Behaviour, Assessment)

Whole school ‘Mocksted’

Our expertise of working at whole school level, with departments and individuals is second to none. Some of our work has been part of national developments, for example developing assessment resources. Whilst addressing identified issues, we will always aim for impact that leads to sustainable improvement. Our key areas of expertise include:

Designing a personalised CPD programme to improve teaching and learning

Increasing good and outstanding practice in the classroom

Coaching and Mentoring

Intelligent use of data and performance tracking to raise attainment

Developing systems of effective self and departmental evaluation

Developing effective Line Management

Department tracking and target setting using data analysis

Support for NQTs, new subject leaders and individual teachers

Effective systems of student intervention and academic monitoring

Government publishes response to the Wolf Review of Vocational Education

The Department published its response to the Wolf Review recently. Please see the quote from the introduction and a link below.

We will take action on all of Professor Wolf’s individual recommendations, and in doing so, deliver on three key themes.
We will:

  • Ensure that all young people study and achieve in English and mathematics, ideally to GCSE A*-C, by the age of 19. For those young people who are not immediately able to achieve these qualifications, we will identify high quality English and maths qualifications that will enable them to progress to GCSE later. We will also reform GCSE to ensure that they are a more reliable indicator of achievement in the basics, in particular by ensuring that GCSEs are reformed alongside our current review of the National Curriculum.
  • Reform performance tables and funding rules to remove the perverse incentives which have served only to devalue vocational education, while pushing young people into qualification routes that do not allow them to move into work or further learning. Those vocational qualifications that attract performance points will be the very best for young people – in terms of their content, assessment and progression.
  • Look at the experience of other countries to simplify Apprenticeships, remove bureaucracy and make them easier for employers to offer.

This is a substantial programme of reform that will transform the lives of young people. While system change on this scale cannot happen overnight, we are determined to act as quickly as possible to ensure that improvements can begin to have a positive impact for young people as soon as possible and urge all delivery partners to do the same.

We are also delighted that Professor Wolf has agreed that she will continue to provide advice to the Government as plans for implementation are developed in more detail and then delivered. Working closely with Government officials, she will ensure the spirit and detail of the review is implemented and will provide Ministers with regular updates on progress.

This document sets out the Government’s response to Professor Wolf’s recommendations. We accept all of them, and what follows sets out how we will take them forward. Rather than simply take each recommendation in turn, it considers her report thematically and sets out how the Government will implement not just the letter but the spirit of her report, transforming the quality of vocational education for young people in this country.

Australia:

You may recall that I wrote in September to ask who was interested in teacher international development.  Well, we are off to Australia and the colleagues who are going might well be in touch with you as part of their research.  In fact, if you could support Nigel Sinclair (AST, Dereham Neatherd) who is co-leading this trip with some answers to these questions, he will be very grateful.  Colleagues will be reporting back during the ICT Subject Leader Network and the KS3 Network in the Summer Term.  The list of people going can be found in our Fronter room.

Staffing changes:

Wendy Styles returned to Lynn Grove High School at the beginning of January and will be working as ICT AST with a whole school focus on assessment.  Although school funded, Wendy can still provide some support for ICT across the county.  Please contact Seb in the first instance.

As part of the reorganisation (part 1) here at the Integrated Advisory Services we have welcomed Sheila Denny and Jill Duman to be formally part of the ICT Team.  We’ve always worked closely together anyway, but we are now back in the same room and you might meet Sheila or Jill, as all of us are working much more across all phases.

Courses:

We are planning some exciting courses around the use of Google Apps for Education as well as collaborating with Vital on a range of face to face and online courses.  Watch out for the new course brochure to be sent out soon.

Welcome Back

Welcome back to the new school year and a new Term.  As you will know, year 9 students are due to be taught according to the new curriculum this year, which completes the introduction of the New National Curriculum for KS3.  We would really like to hear from you, either via email or on the forums, if you have some news in your department.

Changes - who is going where?

Cavan Stewart is working part time from September and Said Inal will be looking after the ICT Department at Thorpe Wayland were still looking for a head of ICT last time we were in contact with the school.  Neil Morson is now Head of ICT at Stalham whilst Steve Butcher has resumed to post of Head of ICT at Caister and Trudi Colman becomes the Head of ICT at CNS. We had a lovely impromptu visit at the office from John Davies of Open Academy  before he retired, Steve Brooks has moved from Oriel to take up the post at the Open Academy.  Richard Gates retired on August 31st,  we will miss him here at the advisory services.  He appreciated all the lovely messages and the card colleagues signed during the subject leader network. Michael Doherty (The Park HS) moved across the border and we wish him well.

Our ASTs Toby Jones and Nigel Sinclair are staying in their respective schools (Notre Dame High School and Neatherd High School), but will continue be available to support ICT curriculum development as well as departments in Norfolk.  Please contact the advisory services for brokerage in the first instance.

Results - early roundup

Most schools have been celebrating rises in results and you may have seen reports on our website and in the press.  We are proud of all the students who achieved an ICT qualification and thus contributed to the overall success.  Please let us know how you got on - we are really keen to find out about pupil successes!

Support offer 2010/11

We'd love to come and work with you either with the department or on the whole school use of ICT.  Below are some of the things that we have been asked to support in the past, but that is by no means an exhaustive list.:

  • Results analysis and planning for improvement
  • Supporting a whole school SRF (Self Review Framework)
  • Introducing changes (Functional Skills, OCR)
  • Adapting to the New Curriculum (i.e. year 9)
  • Accelerating the use of online learning
  • Whole School e-safety audit and policy
  • Raising achievement through improved assessment and AFL

We are also offering £600 to up to 20 departments for full attendance and a contribution of about 30mins at one of our Network Meetings.  This would mean that a member of department attends all three meetings at either A-Level or KS3 ICT Network throughout the year.  The contribution could be at any of our networks, including the Subject Leader Networks.

The funding for our Norfolk Learning Content Networks was cut by £2m as part of the government reduction in funding for the Harnessing Technology Grant this year.  This is clearly a big blow to our efforts to create content and work collaboratively to improve teaching and learning.  Johannes will continue support all the projects already underway and we are looking forward to all the resources that will be shared this year.  A list of current projects can be found here [johannes please edit link].

ICT Subject Resources

There is an significant amount of resources for the OCR Nationals, which are all in the OCR Nationals Room.  Please ask Wendy if there is something you can't find.

Ofsted released subject specific guidance and grade descriptors in draft just before the summer and some of you will have already spotted those.  Just in case you didn't, please follow this link to download them.

The DIDA Assessment Spreadsheet is available in the ICT Norfolk Staff Resource room.  This will support schools entering students for AIDA, CIDA, CIDA+ or DIDA

News Roundup:

VITAL have published more courses for online teacher CPD.  This includes:

Get up close and personal with the IT industry

If you’re an IT specialist teaching Key Stages 4 and 5, look out for our series of themed one day events created specifically for you, taking place throughout the Autumn term. Sessions include:

Project management, hosted by IBM
Developing apps, hosted by Oracle
Technology innovations, hosted by SAS.

Each event will present the latest thinking on the topic from industry professionals and provide you with supporting classroom resources.

The Police Liaison Officer wrote to a colleague to say:

you may be able to help me spread the word in schools about the Virtual Community which I am running for the Police Authority. The idea is to be able to tap into people who wouldn’t want to attend meetings (for whatever reason) but who would like to be consulted on the Authority’s work.

It will also give people an alternative way to communicate with the Authority if they have any concerns about anything Police related.

I would appreciate any assistance in this, and anyone can join, not just young people!

Many thanks in anticipation.

Mandy

Norfolk Learning Platform.

Norfolk Learning Content Network.

Update on APP.

Functional Skills.

New GCSEs in ICT.

Subject Leader Network.

New A Level Network.

IT Diploma Network.

My Illness.

Norfolk Learning Platform.
The main component of this is Fronter, which has now been made available to 38 schools, in which its use is consistently increasing as staff develop their expertise. At least one more secondary school will start using Fronter this academic year, as will all five PRUs. Our leading schools are reporting significant benefits to teaching and learning, as well as to whole school organisation. Contact Pip if you have any questions about your VLE use.

Norfolk Learning Content Network.
Increasing numbers of networks (groups of schools) in each phase have gained significant funding from the NLCN being managed by Johannes. Even with the comprehensive publicity of the project via the web, Twitter, e-bulletins, Fronter news as well as actual meetings and networks, we still need more of you to think of innovative ideas for resources and courses to develop for Norfolk. If you cannot find the answer to your questions on the various support sites and materials contact Johannes for help

Update on APP.
Many schools are starting to make good use of the database and are getting to grips with building more opportunities for assessment into schemes of work.  We are looking to develop this during the next project meeting on Tues 2nd WNPDC and Fri 5th March 2010 Norwich PDC. Have you checked the APP Resources recently? Last change was to the ICT Database in December 09 but Wendy is still working on it

Functional Skills.
Sec Ed have released a Functional Skills supplement in their newsletter It is now in the general Functional Skills Room. The ICT FS folder will be closed off shortly and the materials will only be found in the FS Room from then on. This is because we view the collaborative aspects of FS make separate information points uneccessary. The FS material seen on the Strategy Managers’ Briefing day will be being placed in the FS Room. Don’t forget the final Draft specifications are out or just about to be released
5th Feb 2010 was the final submission date for FS specification accreditation by Ofqual for the examining bodies. The decision date is the 19th March so we will know by Easter.

New GCSEs in ICT.
Specifications for new ICT GCSE courses have now been approved for AQA, OCR and Edexel.  Edexel seems to be the exam board of choice in Norfolk, for those departments offering an academic qualification at KS4.  Most departments are offering a vocational qualification and some are increasing the breadth of the curriculum offer with additional units for from which the students choose.

Subject Leader Network.
Our termly subject leader network will take place at West Norfolk PDC on March 29th and at City Academy Norwich on March 30th.  We are looking forward to trying out some ideas of using the flexible learning space provided by the ‘Future Zone’ at CAN.  Please book with Anne Mitchell.

New A Level Network.
Kim Williams at Wymondham College is running the first A Level Network for us in Wymondham College at1:30 on the 15th March. A number of schools have already booked with Anne Mitchell. If you do A Levels you need to do the same. We think it could follow the same pattern as other succesful Networks with self-help groups starting up and discussion of current issues and their solutions supporting the further improvement of our A Level results.

IT Diploma Network.
We are holding our first IT Diploma network for all practitioners involved in delivering the IT Diploma in Norfolk.  The meeting will take place on March 23rd at the PDC in Norwich.  We will be joined by SSAT Diploma support experts, who will give advice on the extended project.  We will also join colleagues from Cisco virtually to discuss a diploma visit opportunity to their headquarters.

My Illness.
I would like to pass on my thanks to all of you for your kind comments when you heard of my illness especially those whose videos I will treasure.
For those of you who are unaware and think I’m losing it even more than normal and for those of you are know a little but are curious, I have an inoperable Cancer with secondaries which, thank goodness, is very slow growing. Physically I am as fit as ever, but no one is certain about the duration of this state of well-being. Because of this I am, as the old pop star says on leaving the Identity Parade round on ‘Never Mind the Buzzcocks’, considering my options. I’ll keep you all posted. Richard.

There are some useful new resources from the strategy available on the website:

The standards file for level 8 is now available to exemplify the expectations of pupils working at the higher levels and to support improvements in Assessment Focus (AF) 1.

Three new sets of materials covering Handling data, Problem solving and Evaluating have been added to the Removing barriers to progress in ICT series. Using video clips from classrooms, these materials illustrate a range of approaches to help strengthen this key area of ICT capability.

This is organised by NAGC and entrants must make a video clip of what it means to them to be gifted and talented in today’s society. The clip must contain our It’s Alright to be Bright! four line wording and should be original, humorous and have universal appeal.

Please find more details here:YouTube Competition.pdf
