Brief description

English, literacy across the curriculum, global dimensions, IWB training, NEAD

Who am I?

Actress, writer, singer, performer, teacher... and I get to do these every day as part of my job!

Born in England, I was brought up in South Australia and travelled widely at the heels of my parents. Following university, at UEA, I went to India for a year and did voluntary work, mostly health and education orientated. I returned to the UK to do my PGCE at Bretton Hall College of the ARTS, where I explored an integrated, cross curriculum, inter-arts approach to teaching, which has, in many ways, laid the foundations of my educational beliefs.

Between 1990 and 2003 I taught at a government school in Botswana and developed a very deep seated love of the country and people. I wrote freelance articles for the Air Botswana magazine and published a number of English language and literature text books. I was chairperson of a theatre for 7 years and as part of this enjoyed bringing Shakespeare's work to life with my students and the Phikwe community. Students from other schools would travel for up to two days in open trucks, across harsh Kalahari terrain, just to see the Bard's words brought to life!

I am now resident in Norwich and working as an AST at Framingham Earl High School. I have been fortunate in having a SLT who have supported my love of global dimensions in education and I have been able to take two groups of 4 teachers over to Botswana to keep our school link relevant and cross curricular. My students are actively involved in producing resources from our link and continue to learn from the experience.

I work with NEAD (Norfolk Education for Action and Development) and have produced English teaching materials for Black History Month, Fairtrade Fortnight, World AIDS Day and Refugee Week... I believe our students in Norfolk need to have the world opened up to them and that it is essential that we make them aware of their important role as global citizens.

I am available to work in schools in Norfolk doing outreach work. I am usually approached to work on literacy across the curriculum or global dimensions, but am equally happy and able to help with Interactive Whiteboard training and use in the English classroom.
