We had a great time at our recent subject leader meeting for heads of ICT. We also discussed modernising the teaching of ICT. Most colleagues agreed that we need to keep abreast with new technology and apply it to our teaching. It gives us an opportunity to try out new ideas, whilst keeping hold of good teaching methods. Please find a summary of ideas below.
- Social Bookmarking
- An explanation of how to use del.icio.us can be found here
- We can use this for sharing links with other teachers - my link collection is on the bottom right on this page - click on a tag to get the links for it
- grouping links for a particular topic (e.g. videos for technical skills) which can be displayed as a tag cloud, rss feed etc.
- asking students to collect their research using delicious, by adding necessary information into the 'notes section' (thanks to Steve Beard for this idea)
- Online Portfolios
- where possible we should be moving to electronic portfolios to collect/mark/celebrate student work.
- some courses require this, some allow for it, some don't allow electronic submission, but evidence can be printed
- Social Networking
- The ICT Subject Leader Network, the KS3 Network for ICT, the OCR Network are all on this site - just join! (your RM Easymail ID works on this system, just use the bit before the @) Email me for help
- There are resources on E2BN allowing you to use video conferencing with webcams, blogs, podcasts etc in a very safe way
- Online Application
- There are lots of them, Google docs are a very good starting point
- You need a google ID, which you should also put in your profile instead of the 'Jabber ID'
- You can share documents with other people and also allow them to edit those documents.
- Wordprocessing, Spreadsheets and presentations are possible on google, for a comprehensive list of applications take a look at my links or shambles
