Celebrations for Safer Internet Day started early on 12th February 2008 with the launch of a competition addressing young people between 5 and 19 years old. This year's theme: "Life online is what YOU make of IT" has inspired youngsters to create multimedia projects and to express their views on experiences in the virtual world. The pan-European winners of the competition were announced by the Insafe team in the Safer Internet Day blog that was launched by Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media.

The worldwide blogathon is one of the highlights of Safer Internet Day. It is a "blog marathon" that travels westwards all day long on Safer Internet Day from New Zealand though Middle-East, Europe and South America to wind up in USA and Canada. This year, a total of 28 countries posted to the blogathon with entries focusing on e-safety and awareness-raising about Internet dangers. Postings were made in no less than 10 languages ranging from English to Hungarian and from Danish to Romanian.

A 30 seconds TV spot was created by a Spanish media agency and translated in more than 20 languages to raise awareness on the dangers of the internet. The clip was made available on the internet, on local and national television and in cinema foyers.
