ICT news from Norfolk and beyond

After only 5 weeks, a lot of news seems to have accumulated. Please use the list on the right to find the articles that are relevant to you.

CAS Hub Meeting

We’ve got the first proper CAS Hub meeting at the UEA next Weds 12th Oct at 4:30pm.

We’ve got a few folks registered but if you’re planning to come along could you register at http://casnorfolkteachers2.eventbrite.com/ so we can track names, contact details and so on.  Alternatively, just drop me an email to let me know you’re coming along.

Also – we’re a bit light on numbers so if you know of anyone who might be interested but may not yet have heard about CAS, please pass this on.  The more the merrier!!

Qualifications Update

We are yet to find out which vocational qualifications will be counting towards the maximum 20% (1 GCSE equivalent) for the 5A*-C incl English and Maths measure. We also know that some qualifications have a limited lifespan. We will discuss this in more detail during the subject leader network and I have contacted some of the exam boards to invite them to update us.

New GCSE for ICT being trialled

There are some interesting developments, not least because of an active lobby of those involved in promoting programming within or instead of ICT education. The links below take you to the same document, first page 4 regarding news of another new GCSE and then page 11 with a useful commentary on the current debate.

GCSE Computing Specification Accredited

This two-year pilot course is now available for first teaching in September 2011. GCSE Computing gives students a real, in-depth understanding of how computer technology works. Students will develop critical thinking, analysis and problem-solving skills, which can be transferred to other subjects and even applied in day-to-day life. “I love every aspect of the course from the programming to the problem solving!” GCSE Computing student from Emmbrook School, Wokingham

This course is already being deliverd in Norfolk and you may be interested in the Computing at School Hub if you are planning to introduce this type of course.

Ofqual to launch GCSE consultation

On Monday 26th September Ofqual launched a consultation into the implementation of reforms to GCSEs. The consultation covers the changes being made to current GCSE specifications.

The specifications for GCSEs are to be made linear rather than modular, and greater account will be taken of spelling, punctuation and grammar in some subjects. The consultation will ask specific questions on how these changes will be implemented.

The consultation will run on our consultation platform for six weeks. LINK

Your Future Ditital Event

Your Future in Digital has been a very successful event in recent years, giving older secondary pupils an insight to career opportunities in digital industries. This year the event takes place on 9/10 November at the EPIC Studios in Norwich. Please see the flyer for more details.

Young Leaders Award at Hellesdon High

Laura Boddy (AST) from Hellesdon describes how this award enables young people to produce ICT based lesson starter and plenary activities, teach year 6 pupils ICT and even support elderly people with web surfing. Take a look at her brief report here.

Fronter Y11 and Wednesday Webinars

Fronter Y11 is coming! The current release date for Norfolk is Thursday 13th October. A lot of support can be found on their website: http://frontersupport.com/, including some useful webinars and recordings of previous events.

Norfolk has a Futurelab Hub - Congratulations to City Academy Norwich (CAN)!

The first five Hubs – City Academy Norwich, Copland Community School (Wembley), Fallibroome Academy (Macclesfield), Tudor Grange Academy (Solihull) and Wilmington Grammar School for Girls / Wilmington Grammar School for Boys (Dartford) - are actively engaging with the research base and working on a range of strategies to improve learner outcomes, for example;

The development of ‘World Class Departments’
Tackling within school variation (development of ‘100%
system’)
Defining the ‘language of learning’ and the specific 21st
century skills every pupil will require to succeed in the future
Engaging use of technologies (e.g. iPod touch)
Understanding the role of ICT in bridging the work between faculties in cross curricular enquiry based
learning
Futurelab Hubs are expected to adopt a disciplined approach to school improvement based on action research (a reflective process of progressive problem solving led by individuals working with others in teams) involving staff and students to transform the quality of learning and teaching.

Futurelab are now looking to recruit the next cohort of Futurelab Hub schools. Further background information on Hubs can be found on the futurelab website. Please contact Stephen Breslin if you would like to discuss how Futurelab might support you to transform your teaching and learning.

Reading the latest "SWITCHED ON" newsletter from CAS (Computing At Schools), I would love to see some Norfolk Schools produce their own the folk dances and other innovative non-computing ways to teach key concepts.  As described on page 3 of the publication, there are plenty of resources alreaedy available online.

We will ensure that any video produced in Norfolk gets promoted through our networks and conference.  Go on - have a go!

Bespoke School Improvement and Professional Development

The Integrated Education Advisory Service has a track record of effective secondary school improvement. Our successful approaches are tried and tested and supported by contemporary theory. We understand that the key to school improvement is capacity building through strategically designed, sustainable and manageable models of support which lead to a real change in the way teachers think about their practice.

We also have the expertise necessary to help you establish or monitor the quality of provision. Normally this would be based on inspection criteria, but this can always be tailored to school needs. This may take the form of:

Key Issue Audits (e.g. Behaviour, Assessment)

Whole school ‘Mocksted’

Our expertise of working at whole school level, with departments and individuals is second to none. Some of our work has been part of national developments, for example developing assessment resources. Whilst addressing identified issues, we will always aim for impact that leads to sustainable improvement. Our key areas of expertise include:

Designing a personalised CPD programme to improve teaching and learning

Increasing good and outstanding practice in the classroom

Coaching and Mentoring

Intelligent use of data and performance tracking to raise attainment

Developing systems of effective self and departmental evaluation

Developing effective Line Management

Department tracking and target setting using data analysis

People

As you all know, we’re all in this together and the budget cuts mean radical changes in personnel.

Anne Mitchell, our wonderful admin assistant, is leaving us in mid June, to be replaced (as if that were possible!) by Danni Youngs danielle.youngs@norfolk.gov.uk .  Direct dial 01603 303304. If you would like to get in touch with Anne, you can do so via email until June 14th and then via Seb.

Government publishes response to the Wolf Review of Vocational Education

The Department published its response to the Wolf Review recently. Please see the quote from the introduction and a link below.

We will take action on all of Professor Wolf’s individual recommendations, and in doing so, deliver on three key themes.
We will:

  • Ensure that all young people study and achieve in English and mathematics, ideally to GCSE A*-C, by the age of 19. For those young people who are not immediately able to achieve these qualifications, we will identify high quality English and maths qualifications that will enable them to progress to GCSE later. We will also reform GCSE to ensure that they are a more reliable indicator of achievement in the basics, in particular by ensuring that GCSEs are reformed alongside our current review of the National Curriculum.
  • Reform performance tables and funding rules to remove the perverse incentives which have served only to devalue vocational education, while pushing young people into qualification routes that do not allow them to move into work or further learning. Those vocational qualifications that attract performance points will be the very best for young people – in terms of their content, assessment and progression.
  • Look at the experience of other countries to simplify Apprenticeships, remove bureaucracy and make them easier for employers to offer.

This is a substantial programme of reform that will transform the lives of young people. While system change on this scale cannot happen overnight, we are determined to act as quickly as possible to ensure that improvements can begin to have a positive impact for young people as soon as possible and urge all delivery partners to do the same.

We are also delighted that Professor Wolf has agreed that she will continue to provide advice to the Government as plans for implementation are developed in more detail and then delivered. Working closely with Government officials, she will ensure the spirit and detail of the review is implemented and will provide Ministers with regular updates on progress.

This document sets out the Government’s response to Professor Wolf’s recommendations. We accept all of them, and what follows sets out how we will take them forward. Rather than simply take each recommendation in turn, it considers her report thematically and sets out how the Government will implement not just the letter but the spirit of her report, transforming the quality of vocational education for young people in this country.

E2BN will be running ‘Safe Smartphone – It’s no Game’ E-Safety sessions on 25th May and 6th & 7th July

Once again we are delighted to be able to offer E2BN schools access to this online interactive role play that develops e-safety knowhow.

Each session lasts an hour and takes place at 9.30, 11.00, 1.30.

Your students take on the role of ‘student adviser’ to a number of virtual characters who are concerned about their own online activity. As the scenario unfolds your students will be prompted, via a series of on-screen messages, to consider how best to advise them. Students respond to the scenario via an ‘instant messaging’ type interface. Throughout the session, our experts monitor and respond to your students comments. The activity encourages students to think about some of the dangers that the Internet presents, how to best to deal with them and most importantly how to keep themselves safe.

Simply send an email to info@engage.net with your name, schools contact details (school name, address, telephone number), number of students taking part and say which day/ time session that you would like to take part in.

Sessions are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.

If your school takes it's broadband connectivity form one of the local authorities listed below and you quote 'E2BN' in your email you will not be billed for these sessions

(Bedford Borough, Cambridgeshire, Central Bedfordshire, Luton, Milton Keynes, Norfolk, Peterborough, Southend-On-Sea, Suffolk, Thurrock)
Places are limited to two classes per school.
Session run for an hour, at 9.30, 11.00 and 1.30

Australia:

You may recall that I wrote in September to ask who was interested in teacher international development.  Well, we are off to Australia and the colleagues who are going might well be in touch with you as part of their research.  In fact, if you could support Nigel Sinclair (AST, Dereham Neatherd) who is co-leading this trip with some answers to these questions, he will be very grateful.  Colleagues will be reporting back during the ICT Subject Leader Network and the KS3 Network in the Summer Term.  The list of people going can be found in our Fronter room.

Staffing changes:

Wendy Styles returned to Lynn Grove High School at the beginning of January and will be working as ICT AST with a whole school focus on assessment.  Although school funded, Wendy can still provide some support for ICT across the county.  Please contact Seb in the first instance.

As part of the reorganisation (part 1) here at the Integrated Advisory Services we have welcomed Sheila Denny and Jill Duman to be formally part of the ICT Team.  We’ve always worked closely together anyway, but we are now back in the same room and you might meet Sheila or Jill, as all of us are working much more across all phases.

Courses:

We are planning some exciting courses around the use of Google Apps for Education as well as collaborating with Vital on a range of face to face and online courses.  Watch out for the new course brochure to be sent out soon.
